Important: Butler is not an alarm monitoring, emergency response, medical, fire-suppression, access-control certification, or life-safety service. Do not rely on it as the only means to operate or monitor critical equipment.
Agreement
These Terms govern your use of the Biofects Butler Android application, related website, and Biofects Butler Home Assistant integration (collectively, the "Service"). Butler is a companion client for Home Assistant, not a standalone smart-home platform or service. It requires a separately installed and configured Home Assistant system. By using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
Eligibility and your systems
You must be legally able to accept these Terms and authorized to control every Home Assistant instance, device, account, and network you connect. You are responsible for your Home Assistant configuration, user permissions, automations, backups, network security, connected hardware, and third-party providers.
License
Subject to these Terms and applicable store rules, Biofects grants you a limited, revocable, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to install and use the application for personal or internal purposes. Open-source components remain governed by their respective licenses.
Smart-home and voice risks
Commands may operate locks, doors, alarms, lights, climate systems, appliances, media devices, scripts, scenes, and other connected equipment. Voice recognition, AI providers, automations, networks, device firmware, and third-party services can misunderstand, delay, duplicate, or fail to execute commands.
- Confirm safety-critical actions using an appropriate independent method.
- Maintain physical controls and manufacturer-supported safety mechanisms.
- Do not use Butler to bypass safety interlocks, access controls, laws, or manufacturer instructions.
- Do not expose Home Assistant or Butler insecurely to the public internet.
Third-party services
Butler interoperates with Home Assistant and services you configure, which may include Google advertising services, voice providers, AI providers, device clouds, and app stores. Biofects does not control those services and is not responsible for their availability, accuracy, security, terms, or data practices. Home Assistant and related marks belong to their respective owners; Biofects is not affiliated with or endorsed by Nabu Casa unless expressly stated.
Advertising and future paid features
The Free edition may display advertising. Ad availability is not guaranteed. The Paid edition is coming soon and is not currently offered for purchase. Any future purchase, delivery, refund, and entitlement terms will be presented before payment.
Direct Android installation
Website releases are distributed as signed Android package files through the official Biofects GitHub release repository. You are responsible for confirming the download source, checksum, and signing-certificate information before installation. Android may describe this as installation from an unknown source. Website builds and future app-store builds may use different signing certificates, so changing distribution channels may require uninstalling the existing app and losing its local settings.
Acceptable use
You may not use the Service unlawfully; interfere with its operation; attempt to access systems without authorization; distribute malware; evade licensing or device limits; misrepresent affiliation with Biofects; or reverse engineer proprietary portions except where applicable law expressly permits it.
Pre-release software
Test, evaluation, and private builds may be incomplete, unstable, or incompatible with future releases. They are provided for testing and should not be used as the sole interface for critical systems.
Disclaimer of warranties
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE," WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, ACCURACY, SECURITY, OR UNINTERRUPTED AVAILABILITY. BIOFECTS DOES NOT WARRANT THAT COMMANDS, AUTOMATIONS, NOTIFICATIONS, VOICE RESULTS, ADS, OR THIRD-PARTY SERVICES WILL BE TIMELY, COMPLETE, OR ERROR-FREE.
Limitation of liability
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, BIOFECTS AND ITS CONTRIBUTORS WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES; LOSS OF DATA, PROFITS, USE, SECURITY, OR GOODWILL; PROPERTY DAMAGE; UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS; DEVICE OPERATION; OR FAILURE OF A SMART-HOME, NETWORK, VOICE, AI, ADVERTISING, OR THIRD-PARTY SYSTEM ARISING FROM OR RELATED TO THE SERVICE.
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, BIOFECTS' AGGREGATE LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS RELATING TO THE SERVICE WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF THE AMOUNT YOU PAID BIOFECTS FOR THE SERVICE DURING THE PRECEDING 12 MONTHS OR US $25. THESE LIMITATIONS DO NOT EXCLUDE LIABILITY THAT CANNOT LEGALLY BE LIMITED, AND MANDATORY CONSUMER RIGHTS REMAIN UNAFFECTED.
Changes and termination
We may update, suspend, or discontinue features and may revise these Terms. The effective date identifies the current version. You may stop using the Service at any time. Provisions that by their nature should survive termination will survive.
Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas and applicable United States federal law, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Subject to any mandatory consumer forum rights, disputes will be brought in a state or federal court with competent jurisdiction in Texas.
