Install Biofects Butler

Set up the Home Assistant integration first, then install your Free or private Paid edition on the display.

You need: Home Assistant, HACS, an Android 8.0 or newer display, and permission to add integrations to Home Assistant.

Version match: Free beta.26 and private Paid beta.27 require Biofects Butler integration version 0.1.0-beta.28 or newer. Restart Home Assistant after updating the integration.

Upgrading: tap Upgrade below the Online status in Butler, download the newer APK, and install it over the existing same-edition app. Do not uninstall first, because Android removes the encrypted Home Assistant authorization when an app is uninstalled. Switching between Free and Paid requires separate authorization because they use different package IDs.

1. Install the Home Assistant integration

  1. Open HACS in Home Assistant.
  2. Open the menu and select Custom repositories.
  3. Add the Biofects Butler repository as a custom repository with category Integration.
  4. Find and install Biofects Butler, then restart Home Assistant.
  5. Go to Settings > Devices & services > Add integration and select Biofects Butler.

2. Download the app

Choose the Free or Paid edition. The same Android package is used on phones, tablets, and compatible fixed displays.

Private beta.27 uses the same supported device types without ads or the Free display limit and includes the latest Biofects Aurora refinements. Public purchasing is coming soon.

3. Install the APK

  1. Open the downloaded APK on the display.
  2. If Android blocks it, allow Install unknown apps for the browser or file manager you used.
  3. Select Install, then open Biofects Butler.
  4. Turn off the unknown-app permission afterward if you no longer need it.

For UniFi Connect, transfer and install the standard APK using the sideload method supported by your Connect firmware.

4. Connect to Home Assistant

  1. Open Biofects Butler.
  2. Select or enter your Home Assistant URL.
  3. Sign in on the Home Assistant authorization page.
  4. Approve access and return to Butler.
  5. In Home Assistant, open Butler Dashboards to assign a profile to the display.

Only download Butler from the official Biofects website or GitHub release repository. Checksums and signing-certificate details are included with each release.
